The 23rd Summer Deaflympics, bringing together 97 different countries from six continents, 3,148 athletes, and over 5,000 participants, began with an opening ceremony yesterday (July 19) in Samsun province.
The games will take place in 28 premises in Samsun and its districts such as Çarşamba and Bafra between July 18 - 30.
294 athletes are going to represent Turkey in the organization. The athletes from Turkey have gained 84 medals including 17 gold medals so far in the games.
First gold medal of Turkey won in Judo
First gold medal of Turkey in 23rd Summer Deaflympics was gained in Judo by the team of Erkan Esenboğa - Abdullah Sevinç in Judo.
ICSD founded in 1924
The International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD) was founded as Le Comité International des Sports Silencieux (CISS) in Paris, France on the 16th August 1924 at a meeting of Deaf sports leaders from France, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Great Britain, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Poland and Romania. Mr. Eugéne Rubens-Alcais of France was elected the President and Mr. Antoine Dresse was elected the Secretary General.
ICSD is an international non-profit organisation solely entitled to govern Global Deaf Sports Movement, including Summer and Winter Deaflympics and other sports events for the Deaf worldwide in accordance with its Constitution. (NV/DG
