Of Turkey’s three candidates for the panel of judges at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) voted for Prof. Dr. Isil Karakas. She received 136 of the 185 votes in the assembly.
Karakas will take over from Riza Türmen, who held the position since 1998, and will be the first female judge from Turkey at the ECHR.
Karakas, a lecturer at Galatasaray University in Istanbul, has worked on European Union law and International Human Rights law.
Three other judges elected, from Bulgaria, Ireland and Latvia, are also women, Zradvka Vladimirova Kalaydjieva, Ann Power, and Ineta Ziemele respectively. Mihail Poalelungi was elected from Moldova. (TK/AG)
