Nezir Türkoğlu, who killed his 10-year-old son in 2017, had his hearing at the İstanbul Regional Court of Justice, the court of appeals, today (June 15).
Attending his hearing via the Audio and Visual Information System (SEGBİS), Türkoğlu has been sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment on charge of "murder" and 15 years in prison for "attempted murder."
Esin Yeşilırmak, the attorney of Neriman Deniz, whose son was murdered by the man that she wanted to divorce, has spoken to bianet:
"It is a positive development, it was what we wanted. That was why we appealed in the first place. It was also how the local court concluded the case, it had given aggravated life sentence and also penalized him for attempted murder and previous other crimes.
"However, the court of appeals handed down a verdict of acquittal, saying that there was no attempted murder. We appealed against it.
"The Court of Cassation upheld the other issues and accepted our appeal about the attempted murder. The hearing today was the first hearing of the file coming from the Court of Cassation.
"That being the case, the father has received the punishment he deserves. We struggled to ensure that no crime go unpunished. He is now penalized for other crimes as well and have got no sentence reduction."
What happened?
Nezir Türkoğlu stabbed his 10-year-old son to death in Fatih, İstanbul on November 5, 2017. In her previous statements about Türkoğlu, whom she wanted to divorce, Neriman Deniz said that she had been subjected to violence by him during their 10-year marriage and said:
"We had been living apart since September 1, 2017. Yiğitcan was staying with me. According to the ruling of the Family Court, the first week and the third weekend of every month were Yiğitcan's days of visitation with the defendant. The incident also took place during these days of visitation."
Deniz also indicated that he filed complaints over complaints to both the police station and prosecutor's office before the incident, but nothing was done about it. It was only one month before the murder that she could manage to have a protection order issued.
Deniz also said that the father attempted to kill his son before, but the police and the prosecutor's office did not do the necessary. (AÖ/SD)
