Making a statement following the Idlib attack that claimed the lives of Turkey's soldiers yesterday (February 27), High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell Fontelles has called for a rapid de-escalation in Syria's Idlib.
Posting two tweets on his official social media account, Borrel has said, "Ongoing escalation around Idlib needs to stop urgently" and added:
"There is a risk of sliding into a major open international military confrontation. It is also causing unbearable humanitarian suffering and putting civilians in danger.
"EU calls on all sides for rapid de-escalation and regret all loss of life. The EU will consider all necessary measures to protect its security interests."
Borrell has indicated that "they are in touch with all relevant actors."
