Bartın Province Journalists Association and International Journalism Association For Turkish-Speaking Countries started its "İsmail Gaspıralı Bey Journalism and Human Rights Award”, giving out its first prize to Erol Önderoğlu, Reports Without Borders (RSF) Turkey representative.
UNESCO announced 2014 to be the year of İsmail Bey Gaspıralı for his 100th Death Anniversary. Born in 1851, İsmail Gaspıralı, a Crimean Tatari, was an educator, publisher and politician. He died on 24 September 1914.
Most of Gaspıralı’s opinions were expressed through "Tercüman” (Interpreter) newspaper that he established between 1883 and 1918.
An award ceremony will be held in Bartın Province Culture Center on 1 November 2014.
The ceremony will also be attended by Derviş Eroğlu, President of North Cyprus who was awarded with “Human Rights Special Honorary Award”.
Among the attendees will include Crimean Tatari National Assembly Chairman Refat Çubarov and Azerbaijan National Assembly Deputy Ganire Paşayeva who will also receive the Human Rights Award. (NV/BM)
