A strike planned by the workers of Şişecam, the largest glass manufacturer in the country, has been postponed for 60 days by a Presidential Decree.
The decree published yesterday (October 8) says that the strike was postponed because it was deemed to be "disruptive" for general health and national security, in accordance with Article 63 of Law No. 6356 on Unions and Collective Agreements.
The Petrol-İş union previously announced that workers at Şişecam factories in the southern Mersin and Adana provinces would go on a strike today. It had said the strike decision came after the union and the employer failed to come to terms in eight meetings for a collective agreement.
Strikes by Şişecam workers were also postponed for the same reason six years ago. On June 20, 2014, about 5,800 workers from the Kristal-İş union started a strike after an agreement could not be reached and the Council of Ministers postponed the strike for two months on June 25.
On May 17, 2018, the Council of Ministers postponed the Petrol-İş union's strike for the same reason. (HA/VK)
