The President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan targeted New York Times in his speech in Mersin province (in Southern Turkey).
Erdoğan said:
“There is a newspaper called New York Times. This newspaper excitedly announced the assassination attempt against Sultan Abdul Hamid II of Ottoman Empire. They announced excitedly the death of Adnan Menderes (Turkish Prime Minister between 1950-1960). They invectively announced the death of Turgut Özal (8th President of Turkey).
“Now they have their eyes on us. What’s the odds even if you’re a newspaper? Even you apply the hate speech?
I devote my life to this mission. Do you see how they threat us with the doom of Adnan Menderes and Mohamed Morsi? Do you see whom they ask for advice?”
What happened?
About New York Times article titled “Dark Clouds of Turkey” on the date of May 23, the President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said:
“With an immoral article, New York Times makes a reference to me from overseas while giving instructions to the U.S.A and says ‘These things are happening in Erdogan’s Turkey.’ If you are a newspaper, know your place. When you publish a news like this, you interfere Turkey’s domestic affairs and you abuse the freedom of press.
Who are you?! Can you affect the governing of the U.S.A.? There is no such thing. They don’t allow a newspaper to interfere. In Turkey, certain media organs, provided financial support from shadowy people, want to interfere us like you. We will declare the end of pro-coup mindset with a new constitution and presidential system,” on May 25.
On May 28, New York Times gave a headline: "For Turkey's Ruler, Criticism From New York Is Not Fit to Print"
NY Times: "Having already moved from the prime minister's office to the new presidential palace, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan seems to have assumed a new, unofficial role this week as Turkey's chief press critic."
On May 30, Erdoğan responded: " There is a garbage called New York Times in the U.S.A. This newspaper was writing the same thing about Sultan Abdul Hamid II in 1896..." (EA/BD)
