United States President Donald Trump and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan have gathered in New York.
Being present in New York to attend 72nd General Assembly of the United Nations, Trump and Erdoğan gathered at Lotte New York Palace Hotel. The meeting lasted 45 minutes.
In the press conference concerning the meeting, Trump said:
“It is great honor to host Erdogan Thursday for a meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The Turkish president is becoming a friend of mine and that he is running a very difficult part of the world.
"He’s also been working with the United States,” Trump said. "We have a great friendship and the countries -- I think we’re right now as close as we’ve ever been.” Trump added that "a lot of that has to do with a personal relationship."
Erdoğan said, “We will hold a bilateral meeting with my dear friend Donald. I believe that will have a chance to handle topics such as US-Turkey relations and other matters in the world. I especially thank him very much for us having this chance”.
The Turkish Presidency issued a statement following the meeting. The statement stressed that the two leaders are against the referendum to be held in the Kurdistan Regional Government and that such a step will have serious consequences. (NV/TK)
