President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has made a statement following the National Security Council and Council of Ministers meetings.
Erdoğan announced that state of emergency has been declared to be in effect for three months.
Erdoğan's statement is as follows, according to CNN Türk news channel:
* The [coup] attempt failed thanks to brave stance of our nation against the coup plotters.
* Our nation has become a whole against the coup plotters. I attribute it to our nation regardless of which party they support.
* We held a firm stance by with our nation by coming to İstanbul against the coup plotters. The coup was parried the following evening.
* We have suggested declaration of state of emergency based on Article 120 and the Council of Ministers has approved the state of emergency to be in effect for three months.
The state of emergency can be extended by request of the Council of Ministers on the condition of not exceeding four months at each time. (EKN/HK/TK)
