İstanbul University Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Durman has published a written statement on the official website of the university with regards to the declaration of the academics; “We will not be a party to this crime”.
Durman has laid emphasis on the importance of “protecting the freedom of expression especially expanded for academics” and has noted that “opposing to terrorist actions was required to live together in peace and tranquility.
“The developments upset us”
Rector Duman has begun his statement with the remark; “Developments occurring over the declaration influence and upset us deeply as well as the entire public.
“Our university believes that terror, regardless of what it originates from, what its causes, aims and justifications are, is a crime committed against humanity and that opposing to all kinds of terrorist activities is a requirement for respecting human rights and living together in peace and tranquility.
“On the other hand, we believe that protecting the freedom of expression especially widened for academic and irreplaceable for democratic societies and individuals is a great acquirement in compliance with the our country’s democratic maturity attained by hard experiences, future vision and aims”.
“Wish for an environment of peace”
Bilgi University Board of Trustees member and Private Universities Union President Rıfat Sarıcaoğlu had noted in his statement made to A News on January 13, that the timing of the declaration had been pretty wrong and the academics who had signed it would have to bear the consequences.
Following remarks were included in the statement of the university’s presidency:
Republic of Turkey is a secular, social and democratic state of law. Concerning the incidents, what constitutes a crime will be determined within the scope of law and our institution definitely will do what is necessary with regards to the law.
“We condemn the terrorist activities experienced in our country and wish that these come immediately to an end and a Turkey strengthening on the basis of tolerance, tranquility, peace, democracy and solidarity and an environment of peace are formed”. (BK/DG)
