Eight children have been killed and 24 have been wounded in Türkiye's drone strikes in northern Syria this month, Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) deputy has said.
"In the airstrikes that Türkiye started since the beginning of August, many people have lost their lives and dozens have been wounded," Hüseyin Kaçmaz, the co-spokesperson of the party's Children's Committee, said in a press conference today (August 24).
"Information regarding the killings of these children in the strikes was shared on the international media as well. The spokesperson of the anti-ISIS coalition has confirmed and condemned these attacks.
"We have faced a lot of attacks since August 7. Neither international institutions, nor the AKP and MHP heard the voices of these children ... I would like to reiterate that these attacks must be stopped."
Kaçmaz called on the parliament to investigate the strikes and all political parties in Türkiye should "take a clear stance" against the attacks that have killed children.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of National Defense should make statements regarding children deaths, he further said. He also called on the United Nations to take actions against the attacks in northern Syria.
Kaçmaz listed the names of the children who were killed in the strikes: • Fehime Reşo (17), Tell Rifaat, August 2 • Ehmed Elî Hisên ve Aheng Ekrem Hisên, Qamishli, August 16 • Ebid Mihemed Heci (12), Kobanî, August 16 • Raniya Eta, Zozan Zêdan, Dîlan Izedîn and Diyane Elo, Hasakah, August 18. This strike targeted a girls' education center supported by the UN, said Kaçmaz. |
Since late May, Türkiye has been expressing its intentions to carry out a military offensive in the Kurdish-controlled parts of northern Syria.
Over the past few weeks, local media outlets and war monitoring groups have reported drone and artillery strikes carried out in the region by Türkiye, which has neither confirmed nor denied the reports. (AÖ/VK)
