The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) ruling of right violation given for main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has become final. The Court has concluded that his freedom of expression has been violated by his penalization.
In its ruling dated October 27, 2020, The ECtHR unanimously concluded that the freedom of expression of the politician was violated by the damages that he was sentenced to pay to President and ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Indicating that the Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) was violated, the ECtHR ruled that Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu should be paid 13 thousand euros (~125,000 TRY) in damages.
The government of Turkey appealed against this ruling.
As reported by Euronews, the ECtHR examined the appeal and the panel consisting of five judges have rejected the government's appeal against the ruling of right violation given for CHP leader Kılıçdaroğlu.
With this rejection, the ECtHR judgement has become final.
What happened?
In his application to the ECtHR in 2018, CHP Chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu said that his freedom of expression as guaranteed by the Article 10 of the ECHR was violated because he had been sentenced to pay judicial fines over his two speeches about the then PM Erdoğan in 2012.
