The magnitude of the earthquake that struck Gölyaka, Düzce, at 04:08 early today (November 23) was announced as 5.9 by the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and 6 by Kandilli Observatory of Boğaziçi University.
The earthquake centered in Gölyaka, 210 km to the east of İstanbul was felt in many cities including Ankara and İstanbul.
Health Minister Fahrettin Koca announced that a total of 50 people were injured, with one seriously injured among them as a result of jumping down from high, one in İstanbul, one in Bolu and one in Zonguldak.
AFAD announced the magnitude of the earthquake as 5,9 and its depth as 6.81 kilometers. Kandilli Observatory of Boğaziçi University on the other hand announced the magnitude as 6 and depth as 10.6 kilometers.
Aftershocks
AFAD also announced that Düzce was hit by 74 aftershocks following the earthquake and that the power had been cut in the region as a safety measure.
People spent the night outside due to the aftershocks and they wrapped themselves in blankets due to the cold and set fires trying to warm up.
Schools closed in three cities
Governors of Düzce and two nearby cities, Sakarya and Bolu announced that education will be halted for one day as a safety measure following the earthquake.(SD/PE)
