The automobile driver who killed cyclist Doğanay Güzelgün turned himself in 71 days later. T.Ü. has a record of 17 criminal offenses. He struck Doğanay Güzelgün, who was riding a bicycle on the Kadıköy-Bostancı coastal road, with his vehicle, causing his death.
T.Ü. appeared at the Anatolian Courthouse to give a statement. After confirming that he had 17 criminal records, T.Ü. was brought before the court. The suspect was arrested by the Peace Criminal Judgeship on charges of "causing death by negligence" and sent to Maltepe Prison.
Following T.Ü.'s arrest, cyclists gathered on Bostancı Salih Yolu at 19:00 yesterday for an awareness ride.
Güzelgün's wife, Banu Güzelgün, spoke to journalists at the event, saying, "Today is the 71st day. We received the news that the person who killed Doğanay Güzelgün turned himself in after 71 days. We know that he is currently in prison. Hopefully, justice will be served correctly from now on," and she expressed her wish for T.Ü. to receive the punishment he deserves.
What happened?
Doğanay Güzelgün was cycling with a group of cyclists on the Kadıköy-Bostancı coastal road on the morning of July 18. A car with the license plate 34 GNE 745 hit Güzelgün. The driver fled the scene on foot. 51-year-old Güzelgün lost his life at the scene.
After the incident, M. C. Ç., who claimed to be the driver of the car, turned himself in. However, the friends of the cyclist stated that the person in custody and the driver of the vehicle were not the same person. M. C. Ç. changed his statement after learning that one person had died in the accident and did not admit to driving the car. M. C. Ç. was released by the court, and the police began searching for T.Ü.
