Diyarbakır Governorate on Killing of Elçi

The statement expressed that due to conflicts that erupt occasionally in the region, a comprehensive probe couldn’t be launched yet. Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor Ramazan Solmaz said they attempted to carry out two probes in the region, yet couldn’t complete them.

Taxi driver detained

“Driver of the car, A.S., which was determined to be driven in the incident that left our police officers dead, has been detained upon the instruction of Chief Public Prosecution. An arrest warrant has been issued by Diyarbakır Penal Court of Peace for M.G. who is thought to be a suspect. Identification efforts for the other suspect are ongoing”.

Cartridge bullet not found

According to the news on newspapers, cartridge bullet that hit Elçi couldn’t be found. It will be determined which gun was used as the cartridge bullet is found.

Weapons of police officers at the scene of the incident have been sent to ballistic examination within the scope of the investigation.

It has been declared that the weapon found next to Elçi’s body was used in killing of police officer Ahmet Çiftaslan. One of the suspects had thrown it towards police officers as he was running.

Police officers testified

Four police officers clashing with Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) testified to prosecution.

A police officer speaking on condition of anonymity said, “I couldn’t understand what happened as I heard the gunshot. Initially I couldn’t realize the one who escaped. I noticed the second attacker. As he was on the move and threw the gun at me, I was distracted and couldn’t shoot him”.

“I fired at him but don’t know if it hit. As I ran out of ammo, I picked up the gun of my fallen friend”, state the other police officer. (AS/TK)
