Having made a call to Taksim Square for the May Day celebrations, some groups and labor unions started to gather in front of the Cevahir Shopping Mall in Şişli, İstanbul at around 9.30 a.m. today (May 1).
Waiting along the street closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic, police officers intervened against the workers after they walked for 100 meters. Five people from the Construction-Work (İnşaat-İş) Union and two people from the Revolutionary Solution (Devrimci Çözüm) have been detained.
The detained have been taken to the Gayrettepe Security Directorate.
Sharing a massage on its Twitter account, the Struggle Union (Mücadele Birliği) announced that its reporter Serpil Ünal who went to Taksim Square to follow the May Day was into custody. Ünal has been released.
Seven members of the Federation of Socialist Youth Associations (SGDF), who started marching from Barbaros Avenue in Beşiktaş towards Taksim, have also been detained.
Police also intervened against the members of People's Liberation Party (HKP) who attempted to walk along the Barbaros Avenue in Beşiktaş to Taksim. HKP members have been taken into custody.
The members of Youth Committees who attempted to go to Taksim Square were intervened by the police at Beşiktaş Square at around 1.30 p.m. 26 people have been taken into custody.
