Many people have been detained during the protests staged in İstanbul’s districts of Kadıköy and Beşiktaş in support of academic Nuriye Gülmen and teacher Semih Özakça, who have been on hunger strike 76 days.

The protest in Kadıöy was organized at Kalkedon Square. 11 people were detained. People’s Law Bureau announced that Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Kadıköy Co-Chair and Labor Party (EMEP) Kadıköy Chair were among the detainees. Seven-day detention was issued for those detained in Kadıköy

According to the Doğan News Agency (DHA), a group of 200 people gathered at the Eagle Statue Square in Beşiktaş at 6 p.m. Not allowing the group to read out a press statement at the Barbaros Boulevard, the police took 12 people into cutody. Cem Gök from the Progressive Legists Association (ÇHD) is also among the detainees.

Being detained in a house raid launched on May 22, Gülmen and Özakça were arrested on the grounds that "they would disturb the functioning of the justice system in case they were not arrested and probationary measures would be insufficient when taken into account prescribed time to be served for the respective crimes".
