A group of students who gathered in İstanbul's Kadıköy district yesterday (April 1) were faced with police intervention while protesting for the release of students who are still arrested or under house arrest for joining the protests against the appointed rector of Boğaziçi University.
In a message shared on Boğaziçi Solidarity Twitter account, it was announced that at least 35 people were detained and the people in police custody were battered. They were also rear-handcuffed.
Following their medical examination, the detained were taken to the İstanbul Security Directorate on Vatan Avenue in Fatih. Giving their statements on the alleged ground of "violating the Law no. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations," all of the detained students were released at night.
Sub-governor's office banned demonstrations
In a message posted by Boğaziçi Solidarity, a call was made to gather in Kadıköy on April 1. Shortly after this message, the sub-governor of İstanbul's Kadıköy district banned all gatherings and demonstrations, citing the recent surge in the number of coronavirus cases.
The Sub-Governor's Office said in a written statement that it took into account the Ministry of Health's coronavirus scientific board and the risk map, which classifies İstanbul as a "very high risk zone."
Students stand trial today
In the same message, Boğaziçi Solidarity also made a call to meet in front of the İstanbul Anadolu Courthouse in Kartal district, where 23 people, including Şilan Delipalta and Anıl Akyüz, who are behind bars over Boğaziçi University protests in Kadıköy on February 2, will stand trial at the İstanbul Anadolu 38th Penal Court of First Instance at 9.30 a.m. today (April 2).
