Architect Alev Şahin, who has been staging protest since January 30, 2017 to be reinstated to her job from which she was discharged, was detained last night (February 13). Şahin was released today.
People's Law Bureau announced on Twitter that its client Alev Şahin was detained in Düzce at around 10:30 p.m last night, and was released today at around 3:30 p.m.
Before being detained, Şahin shared on Twitter the news report that targeted her.
Reason for detention: "Not standing up during Turkish National Anthem"
According to a report by Tezcan Solmaz on Hürriyet daily newspaper, reason for the detention is "openly insulting Turkish National Anthem".
Kamu-Sen Düzce Branch made a statement in support of the Afrin operation yesterday where Şahin was staging her protest. Carrying on with her protest, Alev Şahin didn't stand up during the antem, some local media outlets reported.
Düzce Chief Public Prosecutor's Office launched the investigation into Alev Şahin and some other person near her on charge of "openly insulting Turkish National Anthem".
She has been struggling for over a year
Alev Şahin was discharged from her job at the Environment and Urbanization Provincial Directorate by Statutory Decree dated January 6, 2017.
She has been staging sit-in protest with a banner reading "I want my job back" since January 30, 2017. She started to carry out her protest in the square from Monday to Wednesday, and in front of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) Düzce provincial building on Thursday since January 31. (BK/TK)
