Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş has said, “I can say that the European Parliament (EP) is one of the most efficient institutions that closely monitor what is happening in Turkey. We want this to be a bit more materialized. For instance, the EP can develop official initiatives as to the peace process, resolution process in Turkey”.
Being in Brussels with the delegation, Demirtaş made statements to the press after meeting with EP President Martin Schulz.
“Lunacies such as arrests may happen”
Noting that “There might be some attempts against our party and MPs in the upcoming days”, Demirtaş stated that “Some lunacies such as detention, seize, bringing by force or even arrest may happen in Turkey”.
“As a matter of fact, trustee appointments to our municipalities, arrests and suspensions of our mayors, DBP (Democratic Regions Party) Co-Chair Kamuran Yüksek’s being arrested for 165 days…These all demonstrate that unless there is a strong resistance in Turkey’s democracy front, a strong democratic solidarity in the international area, Turkey can’t be saved from being dragged to a disaster”.
Remarking that parliament doesn’t function anymore because the prime minister and president “bypasses it”, Demirtaş said that the government tries to take advantage of the coup attempt.
Demirtaş also urged the EP to develop official initiatives by forming a commission to discuss how to return to truce and peace process, and that to monitor the peace processes if it starts. (YY/TK)
