Gendarmerie forces intervened a group of villagers on watch-duty in Urfa’s Suruç district located in the border with Kobane, leaving Democratic Regions Party (DBP) administrator Semra Demir gravely injured.
The incident took place on Wednesday night when a tear gas bomb canister hit Semra Demir in the head.
Following the incident, DBP released a statement informing that Demir’s situation remained critical after the attack.
“Our Central Executive Board member Semra Demir has been hit by a tear gas canister while she was with villagers in Mehser village. The canister was fired from a close range and aimed at protestors. Tranferred to Mehmet Akif İnan Hospital in Urfa, she is still in critical condition.
Several attacks were also reported from Boydê and Henêrk villagers where dozens of demonstrators arrived from Van, Erzurum and Siirt provinces. Dozens were reportedly affected by the gas.
“Responsible: AKP”
The statement continued as follows:
“Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) attacks continue with full swing. The tear gas bombs are not employed to disperse protestors in the universal standards but to injure and even kill people.
“The responsible is not couple of local bureaucrats but AKP itself. Therefore, they will be responsible from deaths as well.
“We urged the AKP state to leave behind this violence and launched investigations on those responsible behind the injuring of our member Semra Demir.” (AS/BM)
