'I naturally perform my art'
Behind bars in Silivri Prison at the outskirts of İstanbul, Aracı attended his first hearing via the Audio and Visual Information System (SEGBİS). Presenting his statement of defense, he argued that "he was put on trial just because he was a member of Grup Yorum."
Aracı briefly stated the following in his defense: "I stood trial based on this file and was released before. There is no reason for my arrest now.
"While the statements about me are contradictory, it is basically mentioned that I am a member of Grup Yorum. I am accused of 'being in charge of Grup Yorum choir.' I was, of course, in charge of the choir, I am a musician. Without any exaggeration, I am a musician who gave concerts to millions of people in Bakırköy and Sıhhiye. I naturally perform my art.
"We are arrested over and over again based on the same filed and on the same charges. Helin Bölek and İbrahim Gökçek were also put on trial based on this file and they were released. These two young musicians had to go on a death fast for a simple right, for their right to hold a concert. We want to perform our art and be tried fairly."
The court heard the statements of the attorneys following the defense of Aracı. After a brief recess, it has ruled for the continuation of his arrest.
