A lawyer in the case revealed that the hand grenades that started the Ergenekon investigation were destroyed by the decision of İstanbul’s 10th High Criminal Court. The hand grenades were uncovered when the police raided a slum house in Ümraniye/İstanbul in 2007 and linked them to some retired soldiers who were part of a much bigger organization called Ergenekon.
According to NTV, Vural Ergül, lawyer of Vedat Yenerer, who was arrested in connection with the investigation, said that the court reached this decision in case that the hand grenades may have exploded, but by doing this, it also destroyed the principal evidence of the case.
Ergül continued: “In any case, the evidence needs to be kept until the end of the trial. Despite this, they destroyed the grenades in a great hurry, even though there was no danger of explosion or degradation. They should explain this. I filed a complaint with the Supreme Council of Judges and Prosecutors.” (TK/TB)
