Organization membership, insulting the President…

Bilgi University, Department of Politics student Çağrı Kurt, Boğaziçi University, Department of Philosophy student Jülide Yazıcı, Boğaziçi University, Western Languages and Literature graduate and graduate student at Columbia University Heja Türk, and Bilgi University graduate Mehtap Demirci have been arrested. Bilgi University, Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation student Hişyar Aydın has been arrested in Diyarbakır.
Çağrı Kurt, Jülide Yazıcı, Mehtap Demirci and Hişyar Aydın have been arrested over “being member of armed organization”, and Heja Türk has been arrested over “propagandizing for terror organization” and “insulting the President” in addition to the charge attributed to the other students.
“Columbia University scholarship at stake”
Boğatekin said they don’t know the accusations because of the confidentiality order.
“In their questioning at the police stating and court, they explained that they haven’t been detained before, never engaged in [illegal] organizational activity and told their academic successes. However, the judge has made his decision right away.
“Heja Türk has awarded a hardly gained scholarship at Columbia University. She was getting prepared to go. She has a one-month time before the deadline, she will lose the scholarship in case she is not released within a month”.
Petition from Boğaziçi University students
Here is the text of the petition launched by Boğaziçi University students for Jülide Yazıcı:
“Because of the confidentiality order, ground of the case is unknown to us. Despite the fact that she went to testify with her lawyer, they arrested our friend without any evidence or justification. The only thing we know as to the process is that she has been transferred to Bakırköy Closed Women’s Prison.
“Jülide is a friend who stands against injustices, advocates peace, workers, women and whom we struggle shoulder to shoulder. We demand this unjust arrest to end and call everyone for solidarity. We will be close followers of the process until our friend returns to us and is released”. (BK/TK)
