“It is possible to shorten the term of compulsory drafting within a week of parliamentary work,” said Mustafa Elitaş, AKP Group Interim Chairperson.
A similar remark has been made by PM Recep Tayyip Erdoğan last night in a TV Show as well.
“Regarding the shortening of compulsory drafting periods, we have a consensus with Turkish Armed Forces authorities as well as Defense Ministry officials. The terms will be shortened eventually. I am guessing down to 12 months for long term. And the short term will remain as it was,” he said.
"Short term could become 4 months”
AKP Group Interim Chairperson Mustafa Elitaş said compulsory drafting terms could be shortened to 12 months in a week’s work in the case of a parliamentary consensus.
He also added that such a rearrangement could also affect short term draftings, which could be pulled down to 4 months.
In May, similar statements have been made by officials with a proposed length of 10 months for long term drafting.
CHP proposed 9 months
In July, opposition CHP deputy Osman Korutürk submitted a bill proposal to the parliament signed by 35 CHP deputies. The bill proposed a short term drafting of 9 months for privates and sergeants, and a long term drafting of 6 months for interim officers. (NV/BM)
