After 23 inmates of Kocaeli No. 1 Type F Prison appealed to the Civil Society in the Penal System (CİSST) Association and complained that they could not receive daily Yeni Yaşam for months, the Association has submitted six separate petitions to the Ministry of Justice.
In its petitions to the Ministry, the CİSST Association has indicated that though the inmates pay for the newspaper themselves, they are still not allowed to have daily Yeni Yaşam in prison.
The petitions dated October 16 have also complained that the letters sent and to be received by inmates of Kocaeli Prison are not delivered to their addressees, the letters are confiscated on arbitrary grounds or they are blackened in ways to harm their meaning unity.
It has also been indicated that the cartons, books and magazines are censored by the prison administration. The inmates have said that the stories, poems, novels and theater plays penned by them are also seized.
In the petitions submitted to the Ministry, it has been requested that "the complaints be reviewed and the Association be informed about the initiatives taken by the Ministry in that regard". The Ministry of Justice has not yet responded to the petitions. (AS/SD)
