The Collective Memory Platform has released a statement of solidarity and support for Republican People's Party (CHP) İstanbul Provincial Chair Canan Kaftancıoğlu, who faces up to 17 years in prison for allegedly "insulting the President" with the social media messages that she posted six years ago.
Founded by the families of intellectuals, artists and journalists such as Sabahattin Ali, Hrant Dink, Musa Anter and Metin Göktepe, the Platform has stated, "The lawsuit filed against Canan Kaftancığlu is directly connected with the government's attempt to throw the book at someone for its election defeat due to her role in İstanbul election win."
Charged with "insulting the President, openly degrading the government of the Republic of Turkey, inciting the public to enmity and hatred and propagandizing for a terrorist organization", Canan Kaftancıoğlu will have her first hearing at 9 a.m. tomorrow (June 28).
'Tweets have been there for six years'
"The tweets posted by Canan Kaftancıoğlu, which are now targeted by the government, have been there for six years. Apparently, they had something else in mind", the Platform has indicated in its statement.
Underlining that "the reasons for this lawsuit are quite apparent for them", the Collective Memory Platform has continued,
"The lawsuit filed against CHP İstanbul Provincial Chair Canan Kaftancığlu is directly connected with the government's attempt to throw the book at someone for its election defeat due to her role in İstanbul election win."
"Canan Kaftancıoğlu is a physician and politician who has spent her life struggling for human rights, equality and justice, prioritizing not herself, but her country and modernity and keeps standing behind her principles."
'It means saying 'Enough, shush now' to opposition'
Concluding its statement, the Platform has stated, "For us, this lawsuit is not only a demand for penalizing a member of our family. This lawsuit was also filed against our principles that we have been struggling for our loved ones in this country as well as our search for justice, rights, law and equality.
"Moreover, it also means saying 'Enough, shush now" to the opposition by drawing the provincial chair of the main opposition party of a country with - so to say - unlawful accusations. We state that we will continue holding the member of our family in high esteem to the end."
