39-year-old Specialist Sergeant Birol Mutlu was fatally injured in the course of a military operation in the region of Dağlıca in the province of Hakkari in south-eastern Turkey on 10 May. One military officer was injured and taken to a military hospital.
According to the list of "anti-terror incidents" published by the General Staff of the Turkish Army, the incident was caused by a hand-made detonator buried by the militant Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
As reported by the Anatolian News Agency (AA), Mutlu was married and had a 16-year-old daughter and an eight-year-old son who live in Kayseri (central Anatolia). Apparently, Mutlu was planning to retire from military service in two years' time.

Hakkari is a province at the tip of the pre-dominantly Kurdish region of south-eastern Anatolia. According to Fırat News Agency (ANF), artillery fire shot from Çukurca/Hakkari hit civilians in northern Iraq. 27-year-old Hüseyin Rekanı died of howitzer ammunition in the village of Benıstan in the district of Şeladize in northern Iraq. His wife and his three children got injured. His seriously injured children were taken to the Amediye hospital. (TK/VK)
