Cleaning supplies, sanitizers and masks are not provided in sufficient quantities and free of charge in prisons, Republican Peoples' Party (CHP) İrfan Kapla has said in a parliamentary question to Minister of Justice Abdülhamit Gül.
"The inadequacy of hygiene measures has reached a lethal extent in prisons, which do not allow adequate access to daylight and where there is no air circulation considering their architectural conditions," he said.
Aside from hygiene, prisoners have also been complaining about not being able to maintain physical distance as time restrictions at cafeterias and dining halls cause long queues, the MP added.
He asked the minister whether they were planning to remove time restrictions and increase daily food allowance for prisoners, which rights groups say was too low to maintain a healthy diet.
He also asked whether the ministry was working to provide chronically ill prisoners with appropriate food. (TP/VK)
