The Supreme Election Council (YSK) has ruled that the certificate of election of ruling Justice and Development Party's (AKP) Ceylanpınar District Co-Mayor in Urfa shall be cancelled.
As reported by the state-run Anadolu Agency (AA), an objection was lodged against the mayorship of AKP's Aksak on the ground that he was previously convicted of a crime. This objection regarding the criminal record of Aksak was discussed and concluded by the YSK.
Considering that the verdict of conviction previously given for the mayor is in the criminal record archive, the YSK has ruled that his certificate of election shall be revoked as he is not eligible to be elected. According to the relevant law, a previous criminal record prevents a person from being elected in polls.
The new District Mayor of Ceylanpınar will be elected by the Municipal Council members. (EKN/SD)
