Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu has responded to the parliamentary inquiry submitted by Republican People's Party (CHP) İstanbul MP Sezgin Tanrıkulu requesting an explanation from Çavuşoğlu about propagandizing for the referendum and calling on the people from the balcony of the Consulate General of Turkey in Germany despite provisions prohibiting all sorts of election propaganda abroad.
Responding to the parliamentary inquiry submitted on March 23, 2017, Çavuşoğlu said today (April 13):
"We make an effort that the ministers of the cabinet come together with our citizens living in the countries they visited. In this context, I came together with our citizens in Hamburg on March 7, 2017 ahead of an official meeting with my German colleague Sigmar Gabriel on March 8, 2017 in Berlin".
"No election propaganda allowed abroad and in representatives in foreign countries"
According to Article 10 of the election law in Turkey published in the Official Gazette on March 22, 2008, propagandizing outside of the state of Turkey and in the representatives in foreign countries is not allowed.
The Supreme Election Board (YSK) in its resolution No. 109 issued on February 15, 2017 also prohibited election propaganda abroad and in customs stations. (EKN/DG)
