The local government in the northwestern Çanakkale province has imposed restrictions on water usage because of the drought in the city.
In a statement today (March 2), the Çanakkale Municipality noted that the amount of water in the Atikhisar Dam, which meets the city's needs for drinking and utility water and agricultural irrigation needs had reduced significantly. The dam currently holds 23 million cubic meters of water, whereas its capacity is 54 million cubic meters.
As part of the measures taken by the municipality, the residents of the city are banned from washing the exteriors and interiors of homes and businesses, cars and carpets with hoses.
Businesses that use high amounts of water such as car and carpet washing businesses and public baths and toilets will have to use prepaid water meters. The amount of water that car washing businesses can use per month was limited to 20 cubic meters.
Garden irrigation should be carried out in the morning and evening, if possible with well water and using sprinkler/drip systems.
Also, industrial facilities will restrict their water usage. (TY/VK)
