Can Dündar has quit his position as the Editor-in-Chief of Cumhuriyet daily, which he was assigned to on February 9, 2015.
Dündar announced his resignation in today’s issue of Cumhuriyet Daily in an article with the title “Farewell Time”. Noting that he would continue writing columns in Cumhuriyet daily, Dündar added that we are faced with the Government instead of Courts in the State of Emergency (OHAL) and said; “Trusting such a judiciary would be like stretching out one’s head to a guillotine [...] that’s why I have decided not to surrender to this judicial system until OHAL is lifted.”
After having stayed in prison for three months together with Cumhuriyet daily’s Ankara Representative Erdem Gül and being released on February 26 within the trial he had been put on due to his report on the National Intelligence Organization, Can Dündar had gone on leave in July and announced that he would stay abroad until the end of August. Aydın Engin had temporarily taken over his position after he had left. (EKN/DG)
