A protest took place at İstanbul's Beyazıt Square against discharges of İstanbul University academics by means of the Statutory Decree enacted during the State of Emergency declared in the wake of July 15 coup attempt.
The protest was organized by İstanbul University Democratic University Initiative, Union of Health and Social Services Workers Aksaray Branch, Union of Education and Science Workers İstanbul Universities Branch No.6, İstanbul Chamber of Medicine, University Academic Members Foundation.
Hundreds of people including university students, especially İstanbul University students, Academics for Peace, union and political party representatives, sub-contracted workers and NGO representatives participated in the protest.
Slogans "We will win by resisting", "Shoulder to shoulder against fascism", "We haven't surrendered and we won't" were shouted in the protest.
Of 1,262 academics discharged by Statutory Decree No. 675 that was published on the official gazette on October 29, 17 are from İstanbul University. 11 of the 17 academics are members of the Union of Education and Science Workers. (BK/TK)
