The UK’s ambassador to Turkey, Richard Moore, has made a statement regarding the UK’s closure of its Ankara embassy on security grounds.
Writing on Twitter, he said: “On this subject, as always, the Turkish security forces are providing us with excellent support and cooperation. We trust them very much. In a situation such as this, closing the embassy is a reasonable precaution.”
The UK Foreign Office’s announcement that its embassy in Ankara would be closed on Friday followed that of Germany, which closed all of its representative offices in Turkey due to a “security threat”.
Four people detained
Meanwhile, Reuters reported that three people in Ankara and one in Istanbul had been detained on the back of intelligence that they were preparing an attack against the German and British embassies in Turkey. The agency said the indications of the detainees links to “terror groups” had not been found by chance. (EA/DG)
