Bread Producers Union chair detained for saying 'bread is basic food for stupid societies'

Head of the Bread Producers Union has been detained for "insulting the Turkish nation and state" because of his remarks during a TV program.

"Bread is the basic food for stupid societies. I'm speaking something scientific, not from memory. In Türkiye, bread consumption per capita is 210 kilos. It's 45-50 kilos in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, England, Japan," Cihan Kolivar said on Habertürk TV yesterday (November 7). "Our society eats bread and therefore they have such rulers for as long as 20 years."

Kolivar was detained today after the İstanbul Chief Public Prosecuter's Office has launched an ex-officio investigation into his remarks.

Ömer Çelik, the Spokesperson of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), critcized him in a tweet where he said, "The words of Cihan Kolivar is hate speech. His statements humiliating our nation and bread are impudent."
