Deputy Prime Minister and Government Spokesperson Bekir Bozdağ met with the Justice and Development Party (AKP) provincial organization chairs, district chairs and mayors in his electoral province of Yozgat today (May 23). Before the meeting, he made a statement regarding the sharp fall in the value of Turkish Lira against the US Dollar and Euro.
Stating that there are some people who want to affect the decision of the citizens through dollar, Bozdağ said,
"They will surely do many things to make us lose in the election. We all see the games that are being played now through dollar. You should know that there also exists a will, which wants to affect our citizens through dollar, hold the government responsible for it and benefit from it at the ballot box in the period leading up to the June 24 elections. We see that, too."
Emphasizing that the economy of Turkey is strong and that they know the rules of the economy very well, Bozdağ also added,
"If there are people who think that they can change the results of this election by playing with the dollar and inflicting damage to the nation and its pocket, they are mistaken. The nation has seen the game as well as its players. The nation has also seen the puppets as well as its puppeteers. The nation will give neither opportunity nor permission to them."
Earlier today, the exchange rate of US Dollar to Turkish Lira reached the level of 4.92 TRY and the exchange rate of Euro to Turkish Lira reached the level of 5.73 TRY, marking an all-time high despite Borsa İstanbul, Turkey's main stock exchange, announcing that except for its short-term needs, it changed all of its foreign exchange assets into Turkish Lira.
