Attorney Tamer Doğan Banned from Defending His Arrested Clients in Court

The Ankara 4th Penal Judgeship of Peace has banned attorney Tamer Doğan from performing the duties of advocacy and attorneyship in the court case of arrested journalist Max Zirngast, Hatice Göz and Mithatcan Türetken.

Max Zirngast, a journalist from Austria, and Mithatcan Türetken and Hatice Göz, who are members of the Social Freedom Party Constituent Assembly, were detained on September 12 and arrested on September 20 on charge of "being members of an armed terrorist organization."

Posting a statement on his Twitter account, attorney Doğan has stated, "The right of defense of our clients have been limited" and added that he will submit a petition of objection to the ruling.

"Prosecution" has been referred to as justification

The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office submitted a request on September 18 and demanded that the advocacy of Tamer Doğan be prohibited on the ground of a lawsuit that was filed against him at the İstanbul 14th Heavy Penal Court.

Tamer Doğan was one of the 31 attorneys who were taken into custody in March 2016 as part of an operation that was conducted against the Association of Lawyers for Freedom (ÖHD) on charges of "being members of and propagandizing for the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party)". Doğan was released by the court, which he was referred to.

Upon the request of the Prosecutor's Office, the Judgeship has ruled that Doğan shall not perform the duties of advocacy and attorneyship in the court case of Zirngast, Göz and Türetken. (BK/SD)
