Cafer Y., who was arrested for sexually abusing his 3.5-year-old grandchild in İstanbul in June, has been released. The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has been cited as the reason for his release.
Feminist Lawyers (Feminist Avukatlar) has announced the issue on their Twitter account: "The report of the Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine was referring to strong suspicions of abuse. The Heavy Penal Court, where the perpetrator is now on trial as a defendant, also ruled for the continuation of his imprisonment twice as all reasons for arrest were still in place.
"However, at the first hearing, where even his attorney was not present at court without an excuse, the defendant was released without his defense taken and witnesses heard and despite the strong suspicion, i.e. concrete evidence, flight risk and his risk of exerting pressure on witnesses."
