Amnesty International has demanded that an investigation be launched into torture against high school students, who protested the education system with the slogan “Report cards are yours, future is ours” in Kadıköy, İstanbul on June 8 (Friday).
Issuing a statement concerning the matter, Amnesty International’s senior Turkey Andrew Gardner stated that the law enforcers who are suspected to be responsible for the torture and ill-treatment allegations should be immediately brought before judge:
“Torture and ill-treatment are strongly disallowed in both domestic and international law.
“Authorities of Turkey should immediately launch an investigation into the claims that law enforcers used excessive force on the protester students and graduates, tortured and ill-treated them.
“The authorities should ensure that peaceful right to demonstration should be exercised by everyone including the protester students and this right must be respected. Besides, torture and ill-treatment should be immediately condemned.
“The authorities shouldn’t prosecute the protesters just because they peacefully rallied". (EKN/TK)
