Assist. Prof. Dr. Kerem Altıparmak from Bilgi University, Prof. Dr. Yaman Akdeniz from Ankara University, and lawyer Serkan Cengiz have received their award of “2016 Columbia Global Freedom of Expression Award” held by Columbia University. Akdeniz and Altıparmak attended the award ceremony organized at the Low Memorial Library.
Assist. Prof. Dr. Altıparmak on his tweet he posted prior to the ceremony said they will receive the award in the name of every academic defending human rights and peace in Turkey.
The three legists were deemed worthy of the award for taking the decision of Youtube access block to the European Court of the Human Rights and win the case after their objection was rejected by Ankara 1st Peace Criminal Court.
About the award
The second annual Global Freedom of Expression Award Ceremony will recognize judicial decisions and legal services around the world that strengthen freedom of expression by promoting international legal norms. The prizes are awarded annually by Columbia Global Freedom of Expression, established in 2014 by Columbia University‘s President Lee C. Bollinger. (EA/TK)
