In the lack of a joint democratic opposition, the Justice and Development Party's (AKP) rule may not end despite its loss of power, warned the Union for Democracy (DİB), a platform founded by more than 100 groups in 2016.
"If the joint struggle of the forces of democracy is not realized and a public opposition the creator of which is the people is not brought out, the government's burnout and loss of power will not bring its end," it said in a written statement today (March 29).
"The democratic opposition should be able to put a more serious pressure on the ruling power, which messes up everything, openly declares a war to the 'other' half of the society, attempts to tamper with election laws and close a party to stay in the power, to make it bear responsibility for the collapse and do what is necessary," it said.
Not the people but those who have caused the "great economic collapse" should pay for it, the DİB said: "It can't be concealed anymore. The country's economy has simply gone bankrupt. People are facing hunger, poverty, unemployment."
"There is nothing the one-man regime, which relies on unearned income, looting and the interests of the capital of the most reactionary groups, would not do to stay in power.
"To refresh the alliance with the most reactionary centers, to fortify the sect-cult alliance, the İstanbul Convention was abandoned overnight with the signature of a single person at the cost of women's lives,
"It's against the Constitution but who cares? This was not enough. This will not be enough, because the reactionaries continue escalation when there is no strong opposition against them.
"The ruling power, which can't get the consent of the majority of the public for an Islamist regime, is trying to make the public accept it by force." (EMK/VK)
