The Justice and Development Party (AKP) parliamentary group has taken a group decision to nominate Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as their presidential candidate in the May 14 elections.
The decision was taken in the meeting today (March 16) of the AKP parliamentary group chaired by AKP Group President İsmet Yılmaz.
The political parties that have a group in the parliament are to nominate a presidential candidate with a group decision. According to the election calendar published in the Official Gazette, the applications to the Supreme Election Council (YSK) for presidential candadacies will start on March 19.
Two days for objections
The election calendar also sets March 28, when the temporary list of presidential candidates will be published in the Official Gazette, and the next day for any objections to be made to the candidates.
The two-day period for objections is going to end at 05:00 pm. on March 29 and started to be examined by the YSK.
There have been discussions on if Erdoğan, who was elected the President in 2014 in the parliamentary system and then in 2018 by popular vote in the "presidential system", could run again in the 2023 presidential elections. (ME/PE)
