7 Academics from Karadeniz Technical University (KTÜ) and Prof. Dr. Aydın Bıyıklıoğlu, former lecturer at KTÜ, and a former Justice and Development Party (AKP) Trabzon MP, have been taken into custody within the investigations into the Gülen Community following the coup attempt and have been arrested.
24th term Trabzon AKP parliament member Bıyıkoğlu had been detained in Ankara on August 5 after giving testimony before the prosecution.
Bıyıkoğlu and the other seven academics have been arrested. Eight other academics have been released on probation.
The names of the arrested academics are: Aydın Bıyıklıoğlu, Lokman Altun, Habip Eroğlu, Ayhan Usta, Deniz Güney, Coşkun Hamzaçebi, Hüseyin Ayaz and Bünyamin Sarı.
By now, 39 academics from Pamukkale University, 18 others from Celal Bayar University, two lecturing academics from İstanbul University, academics from Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, 12 others from Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University and one academic from Dicle University have been arrested. Prof. Dr. Ebubekir Ceylan, University President of Hakkari University had been arrested and later released on probation but was banned from leaving the country.
Including the recent arrests in Karadeniz Technical University, the number of academics arrested has reached 86 (BK/DG)
