The Human Rights Association (İHD) İzmir Branch has released its "Report on Violations of Rights in the Aegean Region", which covers the incidents in the months of May, June, July and August 2021.
Speaking at the press conference at the İHD İzmir office yesterday (September 21), Branch Chair Zafer İncin has drawn attention to the increase in the number of violations of rights committed in the region.
According to the figures shared by the İHD İzmir Chair, while 5,304 violations of rights were documented in the Aegean in the first four months of 2021, this number increased to 6,383 in the last four months.
As reported by Mezopotamya Agency (MA), İncin has underlined that the discriminatory and racist attacks increased as a result of the polarizing language of politicians and the impunity of the judiciary.
Zafer İncin has recalled that Deniz Poyraz was murdered in an armed attack inside the İzmir office of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) in June 2021, adding, "Police have recently tried to turn young people from the opposition parties or organizations into agents."
Increasing violence following withdrawal
The İHD İzmir Chair has also underlined that after Turkey withdrew from the İstanbul Convention by a Presidential decision, there has been an increase in the number of violations of rights targeting women.
"While these attacks were ongoing, the law enforcement's noninvolvement in the incidents to a certain extent and the impunity following the judicial decisions have caused violence against women to increase," İncin has said, adding, "While the same law enforcement attacks the women's events-organizations, the judiciary gives sentences to the participants."
Against this backdrop, İncin has commented, "This attitude shows that the attacks on women and feminicides are political."

Moving on to share details from the report, İncin has noted that the report covers the provinces of İzmir, Aydın, Denizli, Kütahya, Balıkesir, Muğla, Manisa, Uşak, Burdur, Isparta and the data based on the applications to the association and scanning of the media has been added to the report.
