Turkey’s Statistical Institute (TÜİK) released its quarterly report on the “household information technologies usage research”, saying that the percentage of internet usage rose from 48.9 percent in 2013 to 53.4 percent in the first quarter of 2014.
Emphasizing that the age group of 16-24 included the most internet and computer users, the report cited that the percentage of households with an internet access augmented to 60.2 percent.
According to TÜİK data, the households with no internet access expressed that they didn’t need internet or the internet provider plan rate were too high.
Aim of usage: social media, online news
The report said that 79 percent of users connected to the internet from their households. The other venues included office, relative’s household, friend’s household, malls, airports, free wi-fi spots and lastly internet cafes.
58 percent of users who connect to the internet outside office or household said they used their smartphones. Others who use laptops to connect to the internet remained 28.5 percent.
Regarding the purpose of internet usage, the distribution was as follows: social media (78.8 percent), online news and magazines (74.2 percent), downloading or playing games, music, movies and videos (58.7 percent) and receiving/sending emails (53.9 percent). (AF/ÇT/BM)
