The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has sentenced Turkey to pay compensation to Cem Foundation.
The foundation had requested that electric costs of Yenibosna Djemevi be met by the state and that the government rejecting the request saying that “Alawism is not a religion and Djemevis are not sanctuaries. The court had ruled that “freedom of belief was violated” and “a discrimination took place”.
ECtHR has sentenced Turkey to pay fine of 54,400 Euros to Cem Foundation.
ECtHR: It is neither objective nor reasonable
The foundation’s application to the ECtHR was concluded in 2014.
The court in its verdict said that “The treatment on the applicant foundation is neither objective nor reasonable. We as the court have observed a belief-based discrimination in exemption regime introduced to sanctuaries in terms of paying for electric bills”. (AS/TK)
