5 were killed on the outskirts of Ortaklar Village, about 35 kilometers southwest of Şemdinli district during clashes with PKK militants, officials said on Sunday.
Officials in Hakkari Province disclosed that a thorough military operation involving Turkish Air Force was launched following the clashes.
"2 PKK militants surrendered, 5 were captured and 4 were killed in the clashes," Hakkari officials continued in a statement.
Skorsky and Cobra helicopters reinforced the operation along with dozens of village guards, local press said. Helicopters heavily loaded with mortars and missiles bombarded areas in proximity with Derecik, Aktütün, Bayraktepe and Gelişen patrol stations.
A rumor--immediately denied by officials--reported one helicopter hit by PKK militants.(NV)
