After a group of Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Batman Youth Assembly members attempted to make a statement for the press in protest at the Ilısu Dam project, which is soon to engulf the ancient city of Hasankeyf and its surrounding Tigris Valley, the police intervened against the protesters in Turkey's southeastern province of Batman yesterday (June 12).

After the intervention of the police, 33 people, including journalist Sonya Bayık, were taken into custody. As reported by Mezopotamya Agency (MA), police officers battered and used pepper gas on the detained in police cars.
