Main opposition party Republican People's Party (CHP) İstanbul MP Sezgin Tanrıkulu has prepared a report which documents the violations of right to life committed against children between the years of 2011 and 2017.
The report has shown that the rights to life of at least 3,936 children have been violated in the last seven years. Another striking finding of the report is that in 2015 and 2016, the number of children who were killed through extrajudicial executions increased dramatically.
106 children were killed through extrajudicial executions in two years
According to the report prepared by Tanrıkulu, between the years of 2012 and 2017, 369 children were killed in occupational homicides. While no downward trend was detected in the number of occupational homicides, 15 of 60 children who lost their lives in 2017 were under the age of 15.
The report has also shown that between 2011 and 2017 (no data is available for 2014), 136 children in total were killed through extrajudicial executions.
In 2015 and 2016, when months-long curfews were declared and conflicts occurred in several cities of Turkey, especially in the southeastern provinces of Diyarbakır, Hakkâri, Mardin and Şırnak, 106 children were killed through extrajudicial executions.
According to the report, in the last seven years, 351 children lost their lives due to violence in general. 68 children were killed due to this reason in 2017, making it the year with the highest number of child mortality caused by violence in general between 2011 and 2017. (ŞA/SD)
